Generic Vibramycin is a cheaper version of Vibramycin, a very effective and trusted antibiotic medicine. Generic and brand name Vibramycin have identical active ingredient doxycycline, and doxycycline will produce the same therapeutic effect as the brand name drug. Generic medications can usually be purchased for a fraction of the cost of their branded counterparts. Because generic medications are often much cheaper than their branded counterparts, many people choose buying generic medications online, and many insurance companies actually require that they be used. The combination of generic substitutions and reference pricing would give patients an incentive to choose the cheapest product, while helping them avoid unnecessary costs.

Generic Vibramycin (doxycycline monohydrate) is a synthetic (man-made) antibiotic derived from tetracycline. Doxycycline works by interrupting the production of proteins by bacteria. It is effective against a wide variety of bacteria, such as Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoea, and many others. Vibramycin may be used to aid medicines such as amoebicides used to treat parasites.

Why is Generic Vibramycin prescribed?

Generic Vibramycin is used to treat bacterial infections, including pneumonia and other respiratory tract infections, Lyme disease, acne, infections of skin, genital, and urinary systems, and anthrax (after inhalational exposure). It is also used to prevent malaria. Doxycycline is in a class of medications called tetracycline antibiotics. It works by preventing the growth and spread of bacteria. Antibiotics will not work for colds, flu, or other viral infections.

How should Doxycycline be used?

Take this medication by mouth on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal, usually 1 or 2 times daily or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication with a full glass of water (8 ounces or 240 milliliters) unless your doctor directs you otherwise. Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking this medication. Some manufacturers state that this medication can be taken with food or milk if you develop an upset stomach. When using to prevent malaria, this medication is usually taken once daily. Take the first dose of this medication 1 to 2 days before travel or as directed by your doctor. Take this medication 2 to 3 hours before or after taking any products containing aluminum, calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, or bismuth subsalicylate. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take this drug at evenly spaced intervals.

Doxycycline precautions

Tetracycline antibiotics, such as doxycycline, can have toxic effects on development of bone in the fetus. Therefore, tetracyclines are not recommended during pregnancy unless there is no other appropriate antibiotic. This medication may make you more sensitive to the sun. Avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning booths, and sunlamps. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. If you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking doxycycline. Tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially antacids, 'blood thinners' such as warfarin, penicillin, and vitamins. Doxycycline decreases the effectiveness of some oral contraceptives; another form of birth control should be used while taking this drug.
