Generic Diflucan is a cheaper version of Diflucan, a very effective and trusted antifungal medicine. Generic and brand name Diflucan have identical active ingredient Fluconazole, and Fluconazole will produce the same therapeutic effect as the brand name drug. Generic medications can usually be purchased for a fraction of the cost of their branded counterparts. Because generic medications are often much cheaper than their branded counterparts, many people choose buying generic medications online, and many insurance companies actually require that they be used. The combination of generic substitutions and reference pricing would give patients an incentive to choose the cheapest product, while helping them avoid unnecessary costs.

Fluconazole recommended dose

The recommended dose of fluconazole varies with the condition being treated, the dosage form being used, and the age and circumstances of the person being treated. Vaginal candidiasis (yeast) infections are normally treated with a single 150 mg dose of fluconazole. In the treatment of dermatomycosis, the usual recommended dosage is 50 mg daily for 21 to 28 days. Patients taking the medication terfenadine when fluconazole is taken in doses greater than 400 mg daily. When taken orally, Fluconazole is well absorbed, with plasmatic levels of more than 90% over intravenous administration. The maximum plasmatic concentrations obtained on an empty stomach are between 0.5 and 1.5 hours following the dose, with an elimination half-life of approximately 30 hours.

Diflucan adverse reactions

The most common treatment-related adverse events reported in the patients who received 150 mg single dose fluconazole for vaginitis were headache (13%), nausea (7%), and abdominal pain (6%). Other side effects reported with an incidence equal to or greater than 1% included diarrhea (3%), dyspepsia (1%), dizziness (1%), and taste perversion (1%). Most of the reported side effects were mild to moderate in severity. Sixteen percent of over 4000 patients treated with Diflucan (fluconazole) in clinical trials of 7 days or more experienced adverse events.

Diflucan drug interactions

Diflucan increases the serum concentrations of theophylline. The combined use of fluconazole at doses of 400 mg or greater with terfenadine is contraindicated. There have been reports of cardiac events, including torsade de pointes in patients to whom fluconazole and cisapride were coadministered. There have been reports of uveitis in patients to whom fluconazole and rifabutin were coadministered. There have been reports of nephrotoxicity in patients to whom fluconazole and tacrolimus were coadministered. There have been reports of overdosage with Diflucan (fluconazole). Rifampin enhances the metabolism of concurrently administered Diflucan.

Generic Diflucan overdosage

The patient was admitted to the hospital, and his condition resolved within 48 hours. In the event of overdose, symptomatic treatment (with supportive measures and gastric lavage if clinically indicated) should be instituted. A 42-year-old patient infected with human immunodeficiency virus developed hallucinations and exhibited paranoid behavior after reportedly ingesting 8200 mg of Diflucan. Fluconazole is largely excreted in urine. A three-hour hemodialysis session decreases plasma levels by approximately 50%.
